This is the last thing an IT manager needs. After all, in exchange for hard-won server and software upgrades, datacenter managers are already asked to do more with less. So the sidetracking of critical datacenter personnel to perform equipment inventories can further impact service inventory integration and server maintenance operations.
For those with a hundred or more racks of critical corporate servers and related computers, storage devices, network hardware and test equipment, the usual manual collection methods such as barcode or passive RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) are not sufficient. Their results become outdated very quickly. What's called for is automated inventory.
